Reform the California Transportation Commission for Equitable Representation

Reform the California Transportation Commission for Equitable Representation

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) is a powerful decision-making body with great authority over statewide transportation policy and funding. Currently, no requirement exists for representation on the CTC from communities most drastically affected by the decisions it makes—like our lowest-income neighbors and our communities of color.

AB 179 would require that at least one commissioner have experience working with historically disadvantaged groups and environmental justice, and mandate that the CTC better coordinate with the California Air Resources Board. Representation is a critical element in creating equitable transportation, and we stand with our partners in supporting this push for a more qualified California Transportation Committee serving all Californians.

Decision-makers must understand how transportation decisions affect the air we breathe and the communities we live in. Email your state Assemblymember today and urge them to vote yes on AB 179 on the Assembly Floor this Friday, May 26th. It requires at least one appointed California Transportation Commissioner to have specific qualification in environmental justice. The bill would also require regular coordination of the California Transportation Commission with the Air Resources Board.
