Dear Governor Newsom,

I urge you to sign SB 127, the Complete Streets for Active Living Bill, into law. SB 127 makes bike and pedestrian safety a default consideration when Caltrans is already repaving or repairing a street. It makes the state a partner in creating walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, instead of an obstacle.

Here’s why you should sign SB 127:

- Because Caltrans treats all their roads like high-speed highways, even when they are main streets through our cities and towns. These are usually the most dangerous streets for Californians, especially children and older adults. SB 127 will change that. 
- The climate crisis demands that we create walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, and city leaders are trying, but Caltrans is an obstacle. SB 127 will change that.
- SB 127 is flexible. If a safety improvement is inappropriate for some reason (for example, if it’s too expensive), the only mandate is for Caltrans to explain that in a public hearing. 
- SB 127 is smart. The most cost-effective time to make a safety improvement is when you’re repaving or rebuilding the street anyway. 
- SB 127 is popular. A June 2017 David Binder Research poll found that 4 out of 5 voters think that the state should “change the way they build streets and roads to make them safe for all users.” 
- If California is serious about addressing climate change, we have to give more people the opportunity to safely get around by transit, on foot, by bike and on scooters. We need to build Complete Streets because our future depends on it.

We want to be proud of California as a leader in creating a strong and healthy America.
