INVEST in America Act

The INVEST in America Act, pending in Congress right now, includes a big increase in funding for alternative transportation projects, including biking and walking: $6 billion over four years ($1.5 billion/year). CalBike is doing all we can to support bicycling in California, but our state desperately needs more funding for vital bike infrastructure. The INVEST Act will provide some of that funding.

Because the rules that govern how the entire $494 billion is spent don’t explicitly direct how each state can spend its share, we can press California to allocate additional funds to active transportation. CalBike will press for more Complete Streets and other biking and walking programs.

Please support the INVEST in America Act to reauthorize funding for the transportation system in America. The INVEST in America Act will give states and communities the ability to invest in much needed infrastructure improvements while helping state and local governments keep their staff employed. This bill will not only help the country recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, it will also leave us with long-term improvements to our transportation system.

As your constituent, I support bicycling and walking as essential elements in our transportation system and I support ensuring these benefits are equitably extended to everyone. This important piece of legislation will help make our transportation safe and accessible for people bicycling, walking, rolling, and taking transit while ensuring new investment connects people to their destinations. Providing more affordable transportation options to everyone improves public health and reduces congestion and air pollution in our communities.
 
Building bicycling and walking infrastructure is also an investment in our economy. Biking and walking facilities create more jobs per million dollars than either road or transit projects, and the addition of sidewalks, bike lanes and trails in town centers boost local economies, and help create a sense of community. 
 
Please vote YES to INVEST in America and support the amendments that will make our transportation system work better for all modes of travel.
